Two new members of Partners Chile, who are also English language instructors at the Instituto Chileno Norteamericano de Cultura (Binational Center) in Santiago, visited Seattle, Tacoma, Ellensburg and Yakima in March. The teachers, Paulina Torres and Sergio Díaz, traveled to Seattle to attend the 32nd annual international convention of Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). |
Prior to attending the convention, Paulina and Sergio spent two weeks visiting ESL programs. Their itinerary included City University (arranged by Partners member Jerry Thornton), the University of Washington (thanks to Partners member Mary Nell Sorensen), Tacoma Community House, Tacoma Public Schools, South Seattle Community College (arranged by Partners member Carol Nickisher), Yakima Community College and Central Washington University.
Their program of visits was coordinated overall by Education Committee Co-Chair, Olga Fusté, who also arranged many of the appointments. Partners V.P. David Hedrick coordinated the visit to Central Washington University and also hosted Sergio and Paulina in his home. Dan Groves (a former Utah/Bolivia Partner) planned their visit to Yakima, drove them from Tacoma to Yakima, and arranged home hosting with local families. Various other Partners also helped out. In Seattle, they were hosted in the homes of Susan Sola and Paula Laschober. Bill Zachmann and Patricia Olson hosted Sergio in Olympia over a weekend, and Olga Fusté did the same with Paulina.
